About

Who's actually doing the work.

Small businesses get sold to constantly, usually by people with no credentials and a lot of confidence. Here's exactly who I am and what I'm qualified to do — including where the limits are.

The short version

Joseph Carlson

Joseph Carlson, founder of Formwork Consulting, Colorado Springs

I run Formwork Consulting out of Colorado Springs. I hold a Doctorate in Management, and I built this business because the gap between having a good idea and having an operating company is mostly paperwork and systems — not talent.

To this day, I’m still a serial entrepreneur with numerous successful service-based businesses. Along the way, I’ve learned that experience is invaluable, but the wrong decisions can be expensive. I’ve personally seen how easy it is to invest in services that promise a lot but deliver little, leaving business owners with wasted time, money, and no real accountability.

I started this because I was frustrated with how often business owners are forced to overpay for services that fail to deliver real results, with little accountability, or transparency.

Credentials

Doctorate in Management. A terminal degree in how organisations actually function — strategy, operations, structure and the research methods to tell what's working from what only looks like it is.

With 12 years of hands-on entrepreneurial experience, I’ve built and operated multiple successful service-based businesses, giving me extensive real-world experience in business development, operations, sales, client acquisition, and service delivery.

The thesis

Most businesses don't fail from a lack of ideas.

They stall before they start, and then they stall again after.

The first stall is administrative. You need an EIN, an entity, a website, a way to take money, somewhere to put a lead, a system for paying people, and books that make sense. Each one is small. Together they're a wall — and most people stand in front of that wall for years.

The second stall is quieter. The systems get built, the website goes live, and then nothing happens, because a website doesn't call anybody. That's the point at which most people conclude they aren't cut out for it.

Formwork exists to solve both. We build the infrastructure in fifteen business days so the first wall stops mattering. Then you spend six months in a room that runs ten live sessions a week — every class at 10am and 6pm Mountain — because the second stall is a people problem and people problems don't get solved by software.

How I work

Four things you should know before we talk.

I'll tell you not to buy if I think that's right

The consultation ends one of three ways: this is a fit and you qualify for the milestone guarantee, this is a fit but the guarantee doesn't apply and here's exactly why, or you shouldn't spend this money right now and here's what I'd do instead. The third outcome happens, and it's not a negotiating tactic.

I won't tell you what you're going to earn

Not in a consultation, not on this website, not in an advertisement. Nobody can honestly forecast someone else's revenue, and the industry's habit of doing it anyway is why small business owners have learned to distrust people like me. What I'll commit to is delivery on a deadline and a plan we build together.

Everything has its conditions printed

Both guarantees state their conditions in the same size type as the promise. The package lists what's excluded next to what's included. The contract says what I don't do. If a term seems buried, tell me — it shouldn't be.

You own everything

Your website, your brand files, your accounts, your data, your credentials. Transferred to you on final payment and yours to take elsewhere, including if you claim a refund. Nothing is held hostage to keep you subscribed.

The limits

What I'm not.

Stated plainly, because being vague about this is how people get hurt.

Not qualified, not offered
✓
Not a lawyerI prepare and file formation documents from the information and choices you give me. I don't give legal advice and I don't select your entity type — that decision is yours, in writing. I'll refer you to an attorney when you need one.
✓
Not an accountant or tax advisorI configure QuickBooks. I don't do your bookkeeping, prepare your statements, or advise on tax treatment. Engage a CPA.
✓
Not a payroll providerI set the system up. I don't run your payroll, file your payroll taxes, or determine whether someone is an employee or a contractor. That classification is your call and it carries real consequences.
✓
Not able to promise third-party outcomesGoogle verification, payment processor approval, financing approval, government filing times. I submit complete applications. Other people decide.

None of that is legal boilerplate hidden in a footer. It's the actual shape of the service, and knowing it upfront is how you avoid a bad experience later.

Where we are

Colorado Springs.

Based here, working with clients across the country.

Being here matters for one part of the business in particular. Colorado Springs has five military installations — Peterson, Schriever, Fort Carson, Cheyenne Mountain and the Air Force Academy — and a Space Force acquisition office relocating in from Los Angeles. There are more than 52,000 veterans locally, and the major defense primes already operate here.

For a small business trying to sell to the federal government, proximity to actual contracting officers is an advantage most of the country doesn't have. That's why Federal Track is a real part of this business rather than a topic we mention.

Questions

Things people ask me.

Why is it only $2,500?

Because the build is standardised. Templates, checklists and a defined process mean I'm not reinventing anything, and that efficiency goes to you rather than into a bigger invoice. The room is where I earn a long-term relationship.

How many clients have you done this for?

I'm early, and that's exactly why the guarantees are structured the way they are. I'm carrying the risk while I build a track record.

Do you work with businesses outside Colorado?

Yes. The build works in any state — entity registration is state-specific but the process isn't. The room is online. Federal contracting is national.

What if I already have some of the ten pieces?

Tell me on the call. If you have three of them we'll talk about whether the full package still makes sense or whether you'd be better served another way.

Can I just hire you for advice?

That's what the VIP tier is — a private session each month plus the Saturday hot seat, capped at twenty seats. One-to-one time is the only thing here that doesn't scale, so the cap is real rather than a marketing device.

Let's find out if I can help.

Bring your idea or your business. I'll assess it honestly and tell you what I'd do — including when the answer is that you shouldn't hire me.
